Work First Department/JET Program

LCC's Jobs, Education and Training (JET) Program is within the Work First Department and is one of five designated JET programs in the tri-county area. It is grant funded by Capital Area Michigan Works!.  The goals of Work First are to help participants secure and maintain employment and reach self sufficiency.  People receiving public assistance may have limited education or work skills that are barriers to self-sufficiency and impact their future.  That's where JET comes in.

Work First/JET helps people achieve self-sufficiency by teaching clients:

  • How to use multiple resources to identify job leads
  • How to complete a job application correctly
  • How to interview effectively  for a job
  • How to keep a job or change jobs appropriately

Work First/JET also offers participants additional support as needed:

  • Post-Employment Training (vocational classes) for up to one year for in-demand careers
  • Resources to enhance self-knowledge about current job postings
  • Structured classes to learn job-seeking skills
  • Access to phones for contacting employers
  • Appropriate work clothing and other work related support services

Who Qualifies?

Clients in the LCC JET program are direct referrals through the Ingham County Department of Human Services (formerly known as the Family Independence Agency--FIA) and residing within Michigan zip codes 48915, 48917, and 48933.

JET/Work First Requirements:

Depending on the JET client's family situation, a minimum number of work hours is required for a client to continue to receive JET/Work First services.  In addition to work requirements, clients must also attend a required number of Job Club activities to retain their eligibility for services.  With an increasing emphasis on education, clients are also referred to Learn to Earn for GED completion as well as other educational activities as appropriate.

Client Benefits to JET/Work First:

Clients learn strategies for job seeking, including how to organize their job search, locate appropriate job leads, complete applications effectively, use resources to their advantage, use good telephone techniques, obtain and succeed in interviews, and develop job retention skills.

In summary, LCC's JET program improves lifestyles and increases earning power for families in the greater Lansing area. This, in turn, creates increased independence positive role modeling for children, and improved personal skills through educational opportunities, all of which leads to a future of possibilities, potential and promise!
