Andy Merchant enters his 3rd season as Head Baseball Coach at Lansing Community College in 2015.The Stars have improved win totals and winning percentage each year, including a school record-tying 22 wins in 2015.The 2015 team set all-time school records in every major offensive category, with the exception of stolen-bases, which the team set in 2014 (82). The records set in 2015 included: Batting Average (.316), Runs (306), Doubles (79), Triples (19), Home Runs (17), RBI (258), Walks (201), On-Base Percentage (.417), and Slugging Percentage (.445).The .417 OBP ranked 1st in the conference and 26th nationally. The .445 SLG% ranked 1st in the conference and 44th nationally. Runs scored by LCC have increased from 180 in 2013, to 208 in 2014, to 306 in 2015. The Stars pitching-staff also set a school record with 294 strikeouts in 2015.

In Merchant’s two seasons, the Stars have had eight players receive All-Conference Awards. Individual highlights include Bailey Magsig, who ranked 6th in the nation with a 1.17 ERA in 2014 and outfielder Jake Bozzo, who finished 18th in the nation and 2nd in the conference with a .522 on-base percentage in 2015.The Stars also recorded wins versus the eventual MCCAA Champions in each of the last two seasons.

Merchant previously served as an assistant at Olivet College and also spent three years as the Head Coach of Kitsmiller RV in the Lansing Men’s Wooden Bat League. Merchant founded Kitsmiller RV Baseball Club and guided them to three post-season appearances in three years. The team consisted of top collegiate players from all levels and improved in record each season.

Merchant has an extensive playing career, beginning at Holt HS, where he set the school record for career strikeouts by a pitcher. In 1996, Merchant played for East Lansing Post 205, where he led the team in games started on the mound. He went on to pitch at Alma College, where he was a key contributor on their 1999 MIAA Championship team. Merchant played for various teams over 15 years in the Lansing Men’s League, in addition to several years in the Gratiot County League for the Fulton Sultans.

Merchant is a 2000 graduate of Alma College, where he graduated with a B.A. in Business Management. He lives in DeWitt with his wife Megan and son, Eli.

Assistant Coach: Billy Salazar

BJ Salazar returns for his 3rd year with the Stars. Salazar’s primary responsibilities include working with hitters and infielders. Salazar is a Lansing native and Lansing Eastern HS graduate. He attended Siena Heights University in Adrian, MI and received a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management after graduating in 2013. Salazar played many positions in his four years at Siena Heights, but worked primarily as a middle-infielder.

Salazar’s playing career includes four years for East Lansing Post 205, where he twice helped lead the team to the Palomino World Series in California. He currently plays in the Lansing Men’s Wooden Bat League. BJ lives in Lansing and is employed by Aim High Sports in Dimondale.

Assistant Coach: Ron Murdock

Ron Murdock returns for his 3rd year on the staff at LCC. Murdock brings with him over 40 years of baseball coaching experience. Ron began his coaching career in 1971 with Fulton of the Gratiot County League and remains the Head Coach of the Fulton Sultans men’s team. His Sultans have played in many semi-pro and amateur tournaments throughout the state over his 44 years in charge and has coached eight players that have gone on to play professionally. In 2014, Coach Murdock was inducted into the Gratiot County League Hall-of-Fame.

Murdock is the Vice President of the Gratiot County League, a position he has held for the past 20 years. He founded an 18U wooden-bat league in Gratiot County and coached a Fulton team. The league and his team were in existence for seven years.

For the past four years, Murdock has coached an 18U Saint John’s High School summer league team, as well as their wood-bat fall ball team.

Coach Murdock assists with all aspects of the program, including recruiting. Ron is from Perrinton, MI and currently resides in Middleton.

Assistant Coach: Steve Wendry

Steve Wendry enters his 7th year as an assistant coach at LCC. Steve has been in the Lansing City Baseball leagues since 1987 serving as a player/coach for several different teams. Most recently Steve has spent several years as a player/coach for Guerrero’s Baseball Club in the Men’s 30 and 40 and over Leagues in Lansing. For the past five years Steve has also been a member of the Akron Blue’s Baseball club out of Akron Ohio. This team travels to compete in the Senior Division of the Roy Hobbs World Series in Ft. Myers, Florida every fall.

Steve is from Jonesville, Michigan where he graduated high school in 1970 after playing varsity baseball for four years. Steve attended Kellogg Community College after graduation and currently lives in Clark Lake, Michigan. Steve worked as a Michigan State Police Officer for 25 years, retiring in 2000 as a Detective Lieutenant. Steve now works full time as an Internal Affairs Investigator for the Michigan Department of Corrections and works part time as a police officer at Napoleon Township in Jackson County.
