Basic Emergency Med Services
Certificate of Achievement
Curriculum Code: 0269 (Effective Fall 2003 - Summer 2008)
This certificate program prepares an individual as a Basic Emergency Medical
Technician (EMT). Basic EMTs perform immediate basic emergency care in medical
and traumatic emergencies. Basic EMTs staff ambulances and are employed in
hospitals. State licensing is required. Basic EMT courses are approved by the
Michigan Department of Consumer and Industry Services. An EMT Academy option
is available to students.

SUGGESTED COURSE SEQUENCE
Students should see course descriptions to find out when departments plan to
offer courses. Students who for any reason are unable to follow the course
sequence suggested below (for example, those who are part-time, have
transferred in courses from another school, or have prerequisites to fulfill)
should contact an academic advisor or counselor for help with adjustments.
Option 1 - EMT Academy
This option allows students to complete all Basic EMT courses in their first
semester. Academy courses are offered in the morning during fall semester and
again during spring semester. Students must complete EMTA 101 and EMTA 102
with a 3.0 minimum grade to continue in the sequence.

Option 2
This option allows students to take all Basic EMT courses in the evening and
takes two semesters to complete. The evening sequence begins only in the fall.
Students must complete EMTA 101 and EMTA 102 with a 3.0 minimum grade to
continue in the sequence.
