Students will sample a population of their peers' faces and use their data to
study the concept of genotype and phenotype probability. Students will learn the
proper use of the compound light microscope and then view and draw different
images of mitosis and meiosis. Formation of a paper DNA model will be followed
by a lab exercise that will extract DNA from cells. Time and ability permitting,
the Hardy Weinberg equilibrium will be introduced. With data accumulated through
interaction with their family members, students will prepare a pedigree (family
tree).
Note: Sexual reproduction will be discussed as part of the course.
