Welcome to Career Clusters 101! This section is intended to provide students, parents, and counselors with information about career clusters and how clusters relate to Education Development Plans and the postsecondary experience. Career Clusters 101 provides a glimpse into the history of career technical education training and how it led to career pathways, career clusters, education development plans and the eventual evolution of Career Pathways to Career Clusters.
The booklet addresses dual enrollment, articulated credit and the advantages of both for high school students.
Career Clusters 101 also provides students and their parents with information about choosing a college and the essentials of admission to Lansing Community College, dual enrollment, articulated credit, advanced placement courses and exam. It is our hope that readers of Career Clusters 101 will find it useful.
What are Career Clusters?
A career cluster is a grouping of 16 occupations and broad industries based on commonalities. Career Clusters, essentially developed by the Building Linkages Project, link what students learn in school with the knowledge and skills they need for success in college and careers. Career clusters allows students to explore a wide range of career possibilities based on a student's interests and abilities. An important key to improving student achievement is providing learners with relevant contexts for studying and learning. Career clusters offer that relevant context by linking school-based learning with the knowledge and skills required to meet their own personal career goals.
In order for students to gain the most benefit out of career exploration through the career cluster model, students need to make the connection from high school classes to career exploration to college preparation to the workplace.
The connection that brings a student's high school experience, college plans, and future employment together is the education Development Plan.
