Library Noise Policy

The Lansing Community College Library is committed to enhancing learning and teaching at LCC. Providing an environment that is conducive to study as well as welcoming to all users is an important part of the Library's overall commitment to student success.

These guidelines were developed to help maintain a quality study and research environment in the LCC library.

General Noise Guidelines

  • Headphones may be used if noise from the headphones is not audible to others.
  • Laptop computers may be operated, but all sound or audio features must be turned off.
  • Cell phones and pagers should be turned to no-ring mode or off upon entering the Library.

Noise Level Designations for Open Study Areas

Quiet Study Areas

Quiet study is available in study and multimedia rooms.

Moderate Noise Areas (Second and Third Floors)

The second and third floors of the Library are designated as Moderate Noise Zones. Low talking and small group studying is permitted. Cell phones and pagers should be turned to no-ring mode or off.

Cell Phone Use In the Library

Please set cell phones to no-ring mode upon entering the Library. If you must use your cell phone to make or receive a phone call while in the library, go to one of the following designated cell phone friendly areas:

  • Group study rooms on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors
  • Multimedia rooms on the 2nd floor
  • Restrooms on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors
  • Hallway on the 2nd floor near the restrooms and pay telephone

Where ever you use your cell phone, please keep your voice at a reasonable level to avoid disturbing others. Persons using cell phones in non-designated areas of the library will be asked to move to a cell phone friendly area within the Library, to terminate the call, or to leave the Library to continue with the conversation.

Enforcement

Groups or individuals disrupting the study and research environment of the Library will be asked to discontinue the disruptive behavior or leave the library. All Library staff are empowered to resolve noise complaints and disruptive behavior. Library staff may request the assistance of LCC’s Department of Public Safety if they deem it necessary.
