Dr. Brent Knight
Dr. Knight became the sixth president of Lansing Community College on July 1, 2008.
President Knight has brought a unique blend of expertise to Lansing Community College-an extensive background with various educational institutions, as well as leadership experience in private industry. He previously served as president of Morton College in Cicero, Illinois; Pierce College in Tacoma, Washington; and Triton College in River Grove, Illinois.
Since joining Lansing Community College, President Knight has focused his efforts on the following.
- Student Success---making student success a top priority
- Relevancy---offering the college-level programs and training that are relevant to the 21st Century workforce
- Access---ensuring that the community has access to high quality education at a reasonable price
- Stewardship---being the best possible stewards of the community's resources
Under his leadership, enrollment has increased; operating expenses have been reduced, making it possible to maintain affordable tuition; academic and training programs have been added, including a new i3D technology program; a strategic branding and marketing plan has been implemented; college functions have been realigned to better allocate human and financial resources and increase efficiency; community partnerships have continued to grow; recruitment efforts have been expanded; parking challenges have diminished; and timely maintenance of college property and facilities has been emphasized.
As president of Morton College, Dr. Knight developed and employed a new strategic plan to align the college with the community that it serves. The percentage of Latino staff significantly rose to more than 50% which more closely reflects Morton's student body of more than 70% Latino students. He also developed strong relationships with the board, faculty and other key stakeholders.
Dr. Knight was an officer and vice president of development at Meijer, Inc., a regional retail chain, from 1989 to 1996.
In addition to his extensive professional background, Dr. Knight has served the community as Chairman of Fredrick Meijer Garden in Grand Rapids and as a board member of a hospital and a public school district in Illinois.
Dr. Knight earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Ferris State University, a master of arts degree in business and community college teaching from Western Michigan University (WMU) and a doctorate of education in educational leadership from WMU before becoming a visiting scholar in strategic planning at the University of Michigan. He was awarded an honorary doctorate of Public Service by Ferris State University in 2012.
He resides in the Herrmann House on campus with his wife Risé who is also an educator.
