What is a Histologic Technician?
Histologic Technicians work under the supervision of a Pathologist to prepare tissue specimens for diagnosis. They perform gross tissue preparation and laboratory procedures to show microscopic structure. Histologic Technicians solve problems, demonstrate ethics and patient confidentiality, and use chemical safety and universal precautions. Histologic Technicians work together with other laboratory personnel to provide doctors with information for making a diagnosis. To work in most laboratory facilities, Histologic Technicians certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) are more employable.

Histotechnicians work under the supervision of a Pathologist in the preparation of tissue specimens for diagnosis. Their duties include:
- Assisting the Pathologist with gross tissue preparation and description
- Preserving, embedding and sectioning tissue specimens
- Mounting specimens on microscope slides
- Staining specimens to show microscopic detail
Current and future employment prospects look bright for skilled technicians in this field. Average starting salary for a Histologic Technician is approximately $40,000 per year. Histotechnicians may find employment in:
